Amazon PPC vs Organic: Measuring Profit, Not Just ACoS

ACoS and TACOS are incomplete without contribution margin. How Amazon sellers judge whether ads create profit or rent sales.

Markdown source

ACoS tells you ad efficiency relative to ad sales. It does not tell you whether those sales were profitable after FBA fees and COGS—or whether ads stole organic demand.

Metrics hierarchy

Use ACoS for campaign hygiene, TACOS for account-level dependency, and contribution margin after ads for truth. A 20% ACoS on a 15% contribution SKU is a loss engine.

Segment brand vs non-brand, launch vs harvest campaigns. Blended ACoS hides both.

Decision rules

Set max ACoS from contribution margin headroom. Kill ASINs that only sell when heavily sponsored. Invest where ads lift incremental profitable volume.

FAQ

Should organic sales carry ad cost?

For total ASIN economics, yes—ads often support the organic rank machine. For campaign tests, measure incremental lift separately when you can.

Bring Amazon ad spend into the same ledger as fees and COGS—CostRadar Campaign Profit has ASIN-level contribution, ACoS, and TACoS joined to SP-API orders (product + APIs shipped). Connect Amazon Ads in Settings → Integrations → Marketing once Amazon Ads Partner Network assigns the app; until then the Connect button may stay gated even though OAuth/spend pipelines are on prod.
